An Eagle Project Coach can help guide the Eagle Candidate through the steps of the project. Many candidates get to the project and ask themselves "How can I possibly be prepared to run this project by myself?" In this Troop, we're fortunate to have several individuals who can serve as coaches (me being one of them).
At various stages of the project, a coach can advise on what work should be done (and conversely, shouldn't be done) providing insight into what those reviewing the project may be looking for. A coach can give background information on why certain steps are necessary, and help the Scout develop his proposal and plan so it meets the requirements. While Scouting does teach leadership and planning, the project is a bit larger than most have done yet.
Engaging early with an Eagle Project coach is possibly one of the best decisions you can make in your project!
In this context, the responsibilities of an Eagle Project (EP) Coach are limited to advising regarding Eagle Requirement 5. The relationship is short-term for the time duration between project approval and completion, and not intended to be close or have frequent contact.
A Life-to-Eagle (LtE) “Mentor” is more involved. The mentor advises on completing rank requirements, preparing and completing the service project, the Eagle application process, and the Eagle Board of Review. While I largely consider myself an EP Coach, I do have experience as a LtE mentor as well.
Engage early! When you're thinking about your project and have an idea, engage with your coach.
My general steps are:
Early in the proposal stage, if you have an idea, we talk about it and your concerns to help build it. It's at this point you should be introduced to the District's Eagle Advisor.
When you have a slightly more refined idea, we meet and talk about things like project planning, workflow, scope of work, etc.
Soon after your proposal is approved by the District Eagle Advisor, we meet and talk about creating your plan.
Once you have a decent plan, you move into the project execution stage and implement your plan.
From here it's report writing and project completion signatures.
During this process, engage with your coach if you have questions about the Eagle Project Workbook, need clarification on an item, or would like them to review something.
